Bilingualism of a child in emigration – a challenge and enormous potential

More and more Polish children are growing up abroad – in the USA, Australia, Germany,

France or Great Britain. They naturally become bilingual. Their everyday life consists of two linguistic worlds: the majority language (school, peers, media) and Polish language – the language of home, emotions and family stories.

Bilingualism is a tremendous gift. Research shows that children who speak two languages

languages develop cognitive flexibility, learn other languages more easily, and their brain learns

switch efficiently between language systems. At the same time, however, the minority language

– in this case Polish – requires conscious support. Without regular contact, reading,

conversation and active use, may gradually weaken.

This is where music can play a huge role.

A song in the mother tongue is not a "grammar lesson." It is an experience. The child sings, plays the

instrument, repeats the text many times - often without even realizing that in the same

consolidates language structures, new words and correct pronunciation over time. Melody supports memory, the rhythm organizes the linguistic phrase, and the repetition of the choruses naturally consolidates the material.

For a Polish teacher, music becomes a bridge – between language education and joy

creation. And for a child? It's simply a pleasure.
